Geckos at 2021 Youth & Masters Bouldering Champs

The Geckos kicked off the new competition season in style, crushing it at the National Bouldering Champs in Queenstown and returning with a fair tally of medals and trophies! We’ve set out our expectations / hopes of retaining the Climbing NZ Teams Cup (which we won last year) by scoring an awesome 1836 team points (twice the score of the next highest club!) with our efforts this weekend!

Before going further, a huge thanks to all the parents (Andrew, Angela, Aynur, Chris, Conor, Emily, James & Matt) who travelled and assisted with the comp (thanks particularly to Nicola for taking the lead on the catering front), and particularly to Rowan for all her training efforts before the comp, and support and encouragement during the comp. Matt also acted as Team Manager as well as CNZ Head Judge, and Evie also helped with judging (after unfortunately suffering a comp-ending finger injury in the qualifiers) and supporting the younger climbers.

Commiserations to the North Island teams who unfortunately couldn’t make it to this comp due to Covid restrictions.
